Hawaii Day 3

On Tuesday we headed a little bit south to Kilauea.  They have a beautiful lighthouse and national wildlife refuge there.  The lighthouse is no longer in operation, but it offered spectacular view of the island.  The refuge is mostly for birds, but sometimes monk seals and humpback whales stay in the waters near here.  The whales are only there from about December to April, so we missed seeing them, but the weather was much better today!

All the white specks are birds.

After the lighthouse and some lunch, we stopped at Anini Beach for a little bit, and Dan swam some.  We had to be back at the resort to catch a bus at 3:45 to head to the luau.

We went to Luau Kalamaku at the historic Kilohana Plantation.  Upon arrival, I got a lei and Dan got a shell necklace.  We walked around the grounds and checked out some vendors.  A little after 6:00, they dug the pig out of the ground and it was time to eat!  There were lots of different foods to choose from, and Dan tried most of them!  I did enjoy the pork, teriyaki chicken, and fresh pineapple.  I also tried the taro roll, purple sweet potatoes, fresh papaya, and jasmine rice, but I can't say I was too much of a fan!  After supper, the theatrical part of the luau began. It told a story of some Tahitians making their way to and settling on Hawaii.  There were wonderful hula dancers and some amazing fire performers.  What a show!
